Significance & Legacy

Robert McCormick believed in using The Chicago Tribune to further define the First Amendment right of a free press, to serve as a check upon government, and to become a medium for his worldly views. As a result, McCormick became a nationally-acclaimed "champion of the First Amendment" and a "defender of the people."
